CHULA VISTA, Calif. -
A handful of throwers competed at the HO/OTC Series I for the 14th-ranked San Diego State track and field team Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in nearby Chula Vista.
Jasmine Burrell was the Aztecs' top finisher in the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw. Burrell was fourth in the shot out with a toss of 49 feet, 8 inches (15.14 meters), fifth in the hammer throw (170-02.50 (51.88m)) and eighth in the discus throw (173-03.25 (52.81m)). Former SDSU athlete and NCAA champion Whitney Ashley of Chula Vista Elite won the discus at 204-04.25 (62.29m).
Two other San Diego State athletes logged program all-time top-10 marks. Freja Liljedahl came in sixth in the hammer at 166-01.75, which ranks seventh all-time in school history. Alexa Evans, meanwhile, was 10th in the discus with the 10th-best mark in program history of 160-00.50.
The meet featured many of the top throwers and jumpers in the country, including competitors from Nike, Adidas, Argentina, China, Taiwan and Chula Vista Elite, along with many other Division I schools.
The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow and Saturday with three athletes (Kristen Brown, Allison Reaser and Shanieka Thomas) competing at the Drake Relays and the rest of the team at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational.
