Shanieka Thomas recorded the best triple jump mark in the country to lead the No. 18 San Diego State track and field team Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Thomas, who was making her outdoor debut in the triple jump after winning the event at each of the past two NCAA Championships (2014 indoor, 2013 outdoor), took second in the invitational elite section with a leap of 45 feet, 0 ½ inches (13.73m). That only trailed Ayanna Alexander (45-05.75 (13.86m)), the Trinidad & Tobago national record-holder and 14th-place finisher at the 2012 London Olympics.
Jasmine Burrell, meanwhile, also competed in an invitational elite event, taking ninth in the shot put with a heave of 49-08.25 (15.14m). That was the fourth-best mark by a collegian in the event.
At the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., the Aztecs had three competitors in the pole vault. Kortney Ross tied for 16th out of the 63 entrants with a height of 12-06.00 (3.81m), Thresa Vinson tied for 31st at 11-06.25 (3.81m) and Katherine McGill was 48th at 10-06.25 (3.21m).
SDSU is slated to compete at the Drake Relays from Thursday-Saturday (April 24-26) and also at the Triton Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 25-26).
