MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team kicked off its spring slate on Saturday by traveling to Marina Del Rey, Calif., to take on UCLA. SDSU's best finish came in the second heat of races as the second eight boat finished just behind the Bruin's third eight crew.

The first 1500-meter competition of the day got underway at 8:15 am with UCLA entering a novice eight and an open eight boats to face the Aztecs' fourth eight. First place went to the Bruin's novice eight with a time of five minutes, 8.2 seconds. The SDSU fourth crew finished third in the heat (5:28.8).

The second heat saw San Diego State's best finish of the day as the boat crossed the finish line in second place (5:12.7). Just behind, the Scarlett and Black's third eight crossed with a time of five minutes, 18.2 seconds. The final Aztec boat took part in the last race of the day and finished in the third spot (5:05.0).

After the initial 1500-meter races, each flight competed in a two by 1500-meter race alternating between 30 second of racing and 30 second of easy rowing.

"We want to thank UCLA for their outstanding hospitality," said head coach Bill Zack. "We were very happy with how all the crews raced and the experience of competing against a top-10 program is very valuable. SDSU fans as well as UCLA supporters were very impressed with the progress of the Aztec rowing team since our fall scrimmage in Marina Del Rey, Calif."

San Diego State will next take to the water on March 22 as it takes on Sacramento State in Rancho Cordova, Calif., at 8 am.
