SAN DIEGO - Following an 11-day hiatus, the San Diego State men's golf team resumes its spring schedule this weekend when it travels north to the Bay Area to participate in The Goodwin, March 28-30, at Stanford University. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, formerly known as the U.S. Intercollegiate, commences Friday with a double-tee start on holes 1 and 10 on the par-70, 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course.

The Aztecs, ranked 33rd nationally in the latest Golfstat index, will battle nine top-50 squads this week, including No. 7 and host Stanford, 14th-ranked UAB, No. 18 UCLA, 19th-ranked Washington, No. 22 and Mountain West rival UNLV, 28th-ranked USC, No. 43 TCU, 45th-ranked Oregon and No. 46 Northwestern. The 18-team field also features three additional MW foes in Colorado State, Fresno State and San José State, while Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, UC Davis and Washington State round out the list of competing schools.

SDSU will be paired alongside Colorado State and San Francisco for the opening round, with the three teams teeing off on hole No. 10, beginning at 9:40 a.m. PT. A live scoring link, courtesy of Golfstat, will be available on www.goaztecs.com. San Diego State head coach Ryan Donovan will employ the lineup of junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), freshman Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.), sophomore Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) and senior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), as well as redshirt freshman Gunn Yang (Pyeong Chang, South Korea), who will be making his second start ever for the Scarlet and Black and first of the year.

Schauffele, who owns a team-best 71.62 stroke average through 24 rounds this season, enters the tournament with a No. 30 individual ranking by Golfstat, while DeSantis (72.67) finds himself just outside the top 100, checking in at No. 124. Schauffele has been the Aztecs' top finisher in the last two tournaments, posting an aggregate score of 17-under par, highlighted by a victory at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on March 11. In addition, the Scripps Ranch High alumnus tied for sixth in Arizona's National Invitational Tournament at OMNI Tucson National on March 16 en route to earning Mountain West Co-Golfer of the Week honors.

SDSU placed 14th out of 18 squads at Stanford a year after recording a collective 19-over 859, while Schauffele led the Scarlet and Black with an even-par 210 to finish in a tie for the 16th spot. Host Stanford is the returning team champion, while TCU's Paul Barjon is back to defend his individual title after posting a winning score of 11-under 199 in 2013.

The U.S. Intercollegiate was renamed The Goodwin this year in honor of former Stanford head coach Wally Goodwin, who guided the Cardinal from 1983-2000, highlighted by a national championship in 1994. The event was christened in 1968 and has been contested on an annual basis with the exception of 1981 and 2011. The Aztecs captured consecutive team titles in 1977 and 1978, while Gary Simoni (1977), Lenny Clements (1979), Mark Warman (2003) and Aaron Goldberg (2004) each earned medalist honors for the Scarlet and Black. Other previous Stanford tournament winners of note include Tom Watson (1971), Corey Pavin (1982), Bill Mayfair (1987), Casey Martin (1995) and Joel Kriebel (1996-97).

Following The Goodwin, SDSU will travel to the Lone Star State to compete in the Aggie Invitational, April 5-6, at The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
