San Diego State track and field's Karsen Sper is in third place after the first day of the heptathlon at the 36th annual Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
Sper has amassed 2,972 points after four of the seven events, trailing only Jamaica's Kaymarie Jones (3,174) and USC's Amalie Iuel (3,019). SDSU's Sarah Haydock, meanwhile, is tied for 10th out of 12 entrants with 2,161 points.
The seven-event heptathlon began with the 100-meter hurdles, where Sper was fifth in 14.61 seconds. Haydock was 10th in 16.59. Next up was the high jump, where Sper tied for the best mark at 5 feet, 5 ¾ inches (1.67 meters). Haydock came in a tie for sixth at 4-08.25 (1.43m).
In the shot put, Sper and Haydock finished fifth (31-02.00 (9.50m)) and seventh (29-02.00 (8.89m)), respectively. The first day ended with the 200 meters, where Sper was fourth in 26.39 and Haydock was 12th in 29.52.
The final day of the heptathlon gets underway at 9 a.m. PT Friday with the long jump, followed by the javelin throw (11 a.m. PT) and the 800 (1 p.m. PT).
The open portion of the meet kicks off tomorrow, beginning with the women's 4x100 relay at 9:30 a.m. PT. The invitational and open distance carnival gets underway on Friday night, beginning with the inaugural women's masters mile at 4:30 p.m. PT and the men's steeplechase at 5 p.m. PT. Also scheduled to take place at the carnival are the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000.
