SAN DIEGO - No. 20 San Diego State fell at home to third-ranked Stanford, 12-6, Monday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex. Despite a late rally, the Cardinal was able to preserve its lead to send SDSU's record to 16-10 on the year.

The Cardinal (15-1) made a statement early, getting goal from Kelsey Suggs just 28 seconds into the game. Stanford then went on to score four additional unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead after one period. Offensively for the Aztecs, they were never able to get a clean look as Stanford goalie Gabby Stone made four stops.

Stanford continued to score goals at an alarming rate, this time denting the scoreboard four times. The Cardinal led, 9-0, before Caroline Israels bounced her shot off the right post with nine seconds left in the half to help SDSU get to within eight goals at the mid-game break.

The Cardinal scored the first goal of the third frame to make the score 10-1 and then the Aztecs started their comeback. Carina Carballo slotted her shot in the upper left corner with 3:26 left corner and then Ioli Benekou caught fire. The freshman scored three times in the final 2:30, including one with five seconds on the clock, which gave SDSU a 10-5 deficit heading into the final eight minutes.

Stanford's Anna Yelizarova scored the Cardinal's only goals of the fourth quarter, both of which occurred in the first two minutes of the period. San Diego State received a final goal from Israels on a cross-cage shot with 1:51 left and Stanford emerged with the victory.

SDSU returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to Fresno Pacific (9 a.m.) and Brown (11:30 a.m.) at Aztec Aquaplex.
