MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - San Diego State capped off its appearance at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday as it finished with 28 points for a final placing of 27th. It was the highest point total and finish ever for the Aztecs at the national meet. Over the three days of the meet two swimmers earned All-America honors in individual events while one relay team was also honored.
With its 28 points, SDSU was the top scoring team among Mountain West competitors at the Championships. UNLV scored six points (45th), followed by Fresno State with four (47th) and Nevada with one (51st).
Freshman Anika Apostalon earned the Aztecs their final two points of the meet with her effort in the 100 freestyle Saturday evening. She finished 15th in the prelims with a time of 48.26 to qualify for the consolation final. Her mark of 48.44 in that final allowed her to place seventh in her heat and 15th overall in the event.
Senior Mikaela Macklin turned in a time of 2:12.74 in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke, a mark that place her 43rd of the 55 entrants in the event.
In the meet's final event, the SDSU 400 freestyle relay team of Apostalon, Chelsea Bailey, Maddy Dalcamo and Whitney Weisz finished 24th in the prelims with a mark of 3:18.64. That time was an improvement of 5.27 seconds over the quartet's top time this season and enters the SDSU record book as the second-fastest in program history.
During the three-day met, Apostalon earned All-America recognition for her seventh place finish in the 50 freestyle and was awarded Honorable Mention All-America accolades for finishing sixth in the consolation final (14th overall) in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the consolation final (15th overall) in the 100 freestyle.
Macklin, meanwhile, earned honorable mention All-America honors by finishing fourth in the consolation final (12th overall) in the 200 individual medley.
In addition, the 200 freestyle relay team of Apostalon, Bailey, Dalcamo and Weisz were named Honorable Mention All-Americans with their sixth-place consolation final finish (14th overall) in the their event.
