M. Golf Set for Spring Opener at The Prestige PGA WEST

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team opens its 2014 spring slate in earnest this week when it competes in The Prestige at PGA WEST, Feb. 17-19, in La Quinta, Calif. The Aztecs are one of 12 squads scheduled to participate in the 14th annual tournament on the par-71, 7,070-yard Greg Norman Resort Course, with UC Davis and Stanford serving as co-hosts.

The Prestige at PGA WEST will be contested with 18-hole rounds on each of the three days and features one of the elite fields in the nation. Along with No. 51 SDSU, the event includes 11th-ranked Stanford, No. 17 Washington, 22nd-ranked USC and No. 23 UCLA.

The premier field also boasts highly ranked schools in Arizona State (31), LSU (33), Texas Tech (42), Oregon (45), UC Davis (68) and Pepperdine (125), while Stirling University of Scotland rounds out the list of competing teams.

Aztec head coach Ryan Donovan will bring five golfers to the Palm Springs area, including junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif,), freshman Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.), sophomore Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), senior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) and freshman Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) .

SDSU logged three top-10 finishes during its brief 2013 fall slate. The Aztecs opened with a seventh-place tie (875, +11) at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational, Sept. 16-17, in Bremerton, Wash., followed by a sixth-place effort (897 +33) at the William H McKenzie Invitational, Sept. 27-28, in Albuquerque, N.M., before posting an eighth-place result (855, (-9)) at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, October 14-15, in Sonoma, Calif.

Individually, Schauffele leads the team with a 72.33 stroke average and was SDSU's top finisher at the William H. Tucker (T-4th) and the Alister MacKenzie (T-10th), while DeSantis (72.78) topped the squad with a 15th-place tie at the Husky Invite.

The Prestige at PGA WEST was a fixture on the fall portion of college men's golf schedule for 12 years before moving to the spring in 2013. USC and Washington are the defending co- champions, while the Aztecs finished 12th (891, +39). Michelini (T-33rd) was SDSU's top finisher at last year's tournament, while Schauffele (T-45th) and Kaiser (T-65th) also return to tackle the Greg Norman Resort Course once again.

Following The Prestige at PGA WEST, the Aztecs will return to the course, Feb. 24-25, when they compete at the Jones Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine, at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
