San Diego State softball players Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) and Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) have been named College Sports Madness preseason All-Americans, the website announced today. Miles was picked as a third-team selection, while Bauer is on the fourth team.
Miles, who last month was named to the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List and redshirted the 2013 campaign, was a second-team Easton All-American, third-team NFCA All-American, second-team NFCA All-West Region selection and the MW Co-Player of the Year in 2012 after shattering 11 school single-season records, all from the leadoff spot. Those records included batting average (.429, previous best was .389), on-base percentage (.519, previous best was .467), slugging percentage (.909, previous best was .633), OPS percentage (1.428, previous best was 1.053), runs (62, previous best was 41), extra-base hits (42, previous best was 25), doubles (20, previous best was 14), home runs (20, previous best was 15), RBIs (49, previous best was 48), total bases (159, previous best was 102) and walks (34, previous best was 28).
Bauer, meanwhile, was named a first-team Easton All-American last year, as well as a first-team NFCA All-West Region selection and an all-MW pick after batting .401 with 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, 22 runs, 18 doubles, a .766 slugging percentage and a .462 on-base percentage. Among the all-time Aztec season bests, Bauer tied for first in RBIs and was second in batting average, OPS percentage (1.228), extra-base hits (33), doubles and total bases (128), third in slugging percentage, fourth in on-base percentage, tied for fourth in home runs and tied for fifth in hits (67).
SDSU is coming off a 36-20 season in 2013, advancing to the NCAA tournament for a school-record sixth consecutive year and capturing its sixth Mountain West title and second straight league championship. San Diego State kicks off the 2014 campaign at Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic this weekend, beginning with games against Appalachian State and Oregon State on Thursday (Feb. 6). The Aztecs will also face No. 22/20 Stanford the following day (Friday), and Cal Poly and Seattle on Saturday.
