ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Jasmine Burrell broke her own school record in the weight throw to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the first day of the Cherry & Silver Invitational Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Burrell, a junior, finished second of 27 entrants in the weight throw with a heave of 66 feet, 9 ¼ inches (20.25m). The 66-09.25 broke her own school record in the event by more than two feet (64-01.25), which was set in 2013.
Burrell's mark only trailed Florida State's Briana Cherry-Bronson, who won the event with a throw of 68-10.00 (20.98m). Two other Aztecs - Mikayla Howden and Ariel Oliver - also cracked SDSU's all-time top 10 in the event. Howden finished 10th at 54-10.25 (16.72m), which is the fifth-best mark in school history, while Oliver came in 12th with a throw of 49-08.50 (15.15m), which is ninth all-time at San Diego State.
Allison Reaser was the only other Aztec to finish in the top 10 as she was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 19-06.25 (5.95m). Other top-20 marks on the day belonged to Reaser in the high jump (T-11th, 5-02.25 (1.58m)), Nicole Oudenaarden in the long jump (T-15th, 18-04.50 (5.60m)), Maderia Toatley in the 400 meters (18th, 57.25 seconds) and Karsen Sper in the high jump (T-18th, 5-00.25 (1.53m).
The Aztecs are back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT (9 a.m. PT), beginning with the shot put.
