SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team picked up a pair of dual meet victories as it defeated UC San Diego (146-138) and Air Force (149-130) Friday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. Along the way SDSU captured eight of the 12 individual races as well as both relays and the two diving events as it improved to 5-0 on the season.
The Aztecs also established three new pool records as freshman Anika Apostalon's winning times in the 50 free (23.10) and 200 free (1:49.35) along with her 50.90 leadoff leg in the 400 free relay (50.90 for the 100 free) were new standards for the Aquaplex. Her time in the 200 free, a race in which she was competing for the first time in her Aztec career, enters the SDSU record book as the eighth-fastest in program history.
San Diego State began the meet by capturing the 200 medley relay with the foursome of Chelsea Bailey, Laura Day, Loreen Whitfield and Taylor Johnson clocking a time of 1:44.82.
Freshman Kate Santilena won the 100 backstroke in 57.91 before senior Mikaela Macklin recorded the first of her three wins on the afternoon by taking top spot in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.02 (fifth-best ever time at the Aquaplex). Macklin later finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.48) before winning the 200 individual medley in 2:04.68.
The Aztecs' other individual swimming victories were turned in by Bailey in the 100 freestyle (51.89) and Whitfield in the 100 butterfly (55.77). Laura Day, a transfer from Liberty University, made her Aztec debut as a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad and also took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.07, a mark that ranks ninth for the Aztec Aquaplex.
The SDSU divers, meanwhile, captured the top four spots on both boards led by a pair of first-place finishes by Ashley Stott. She won the 3-meter event with a personal-best score of 321.08 that ranks as the third-best mark ever for both the facility and in the school record book. Stott also totaled 274.43 points while winning the 1-meter springboard with that score ranking eighth best for the Aquaplex.
Sophomore Chandler Marshall was second on the 3-meter board (283.43) and was followed by freshmen Marlee Kersting (270.68) and Shannon Finigan (262.20). On the 1-meter board it was Finigan in second (258.90), Kersting in third (246.30) and Chandler fourth (238.50).
San Diego State capped off the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay as Apostalon, Maddy Dalcamo, Bailey and Whitney Weisz went 3:28.05 to win by over five seconds.
Up next for the Aztecs is another double dual meet as they will face Mountain West foe Boise State along with Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Canyonview Aquatic Center at UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif., at noon.
