SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Marvin Tawasi (Mosbach, Germany), freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany)and freshman Milen Ianakiav (Elz, Germany) each won their first-round match in the opening day of the Aztec Invitational on Friday at Aztec Tennis Center.
Tawasi topped Loyola Marymount's David Doehring, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round of tournament play. Tawasi later lost a hart-fought match to USC's Robbie Bellamy, 7-6, 3-6, 3-10, in his second round match. Jebens topped Jonathan Poon of UC Irvine, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round while Ianakiev knocked off UCSD's Ganesh Alegappan, 6-0, 6-2. Both, however, lost in the second round.
Sophomore Freddy Gelbrich lost his first round match to Ahmad Saleem of Grand Canyon University, 1-6, 6-1 (3). The Aztecs doubles team of Tawasi and Ianakiev lost to the Grand Canyon duo of Alexander Roggenkamp and Benjamin Collomb, 8-4.
