SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State water polo student-athlete Leanne Ford was selected in late July as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
A native of Upland, Ford was one of 429 student-athletes, spanning NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, nominated for the 22nd annual award. The two-meter defender was then selected by the MPSF to represent the league and ultimately found herself as one of 140 up for the award.
The list of 140 was trimmed to 30 in late August and Ford, the lone water polo student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, did not make the final cut.
In four seasons on Montezuma Mesa, Ford helped SDSU maintain its position as a national player on the water polo scene. The senior was a 2011 All-American and three-time all-academic selection at the national and MPSF levels. Over her four-year career, Ford scored 162 goals, which ranks as the ninth-most in school history, and added 176 steals, the 10th-most-ever among all Aztecs.
