EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Allison Reaser totaled a first-day personal-best 3,468 points in the heptathlon to pace the No. 23 San Diego State track and field team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The 3,468 points bettered her previous first-day best of 3,437, set last year at the U.S. Olympic Trials, and is 82 points better than her first-day total (3,386) at last year's NCAA Championships, where she went onto finish in sixth place.
Reaser's 3,468 points are good enough for eighth place with four of the seven events completed. Makeba Alcide of Arkansas leads the 24 entrants with 3,685, while Erica Bougard (Mississippi State - 3,581), Lindsay Vollmer (Kansas - 3,569), Keia Pinnick (Arizona State - 3,530) and Vanessa Jones (Marshall - 3,527) round out the top five. Aztec Nicole Oudenaarden, who was ranked fifth in the event heading into the meet and was the only freshman to qualify, is back in 24th (2,597) after failing to clear a height in the high jump.
Reaser began the day in style by taking second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.30 seconds. The time, which tied Nicole Ireland (2004) and Daveeta Shepherd (2001) for the seventh-fastest time in program history, got her 1,080 points. Oudenaarden, meanwhile, came in 22nd in a wind-aided 14.30 for 936 points.
Next up was the high jump, where Reaser tied for 20th by clearing 5 feet, 3 inches (1.60 meters) for 736 additional points. As previously mentioned, Oudenaarden didn't clear her opening height of 5-00.50 (1.54m).
Oudenaarden came back strong in the shot put by taking second with a heave of 43-06.00 (13.26m) for 745 points. Reaser, meanwhile, was 10th with a season-best mark of 39-03.75 (11.98m) for 660 points.
Reaser ended the first day with a third-place finish in the 200 in a wind-aided time of 23.88 for 992 points. Oudenaarden came in 10th in a wind-aided 24.68 for 916 points.
The final day of the heptathlon gets underway at 12:30 p.m. PT Friday with the long jump, followed by the javelin throw and the 800.
Junior Shanieka Thomas and senior Alex Evans kick off their NCAA Championships at 3:25 p.m. PT Friday in the triple jump. Thomas is the top seed heading into tomorrow, while Evans is seventh.
