HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State incoming freshman Anika Apostalon was recently named to the USA Water Polo Women's Youth National Team. The Albuquerque, N.M., native was one of 29 to make it through the ODP National Training and Selection Camp in late May.
Apostalon and the rest of the Youth National Team will come together later this month for a training camp where they will vie for a spot on the travel roster for summer championship events.
An elite two-sport athlete, Apostalon is an outstanding water polo player and swimmer. At the time of her signing back in November, she had already won the New Mexico state championship in the 100 freestyle in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and captured the state title in the 50 free in 2009 and 2011. She also won the 100 backstroke in 2012. Additionally, Apostalon was the New Mexico high school state record-holder in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. The 2012 Olympic Trials participant was also a part of the Albuquerque Academy championship team that won the state championship from 2009-12.
In water polo at New Mexico High School, Apostalon was the 2012 most valuable player and earned all-state honors in 2011 and 2012 at the time of her signing. She was also an ODP participant in 2011-12 and was a part of the 2012 National Training Selection Camp for the Women's Youth Team.
Apostalon will arrive on campus in the fall of 2013 and be ready to compete for the Aztecs for their 2014 campaign, which will be their first in the newly created Golden Coast Conference.
