COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State Men's Tennis coach Gene Carswell was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday. It's the fourth time Carswell has won the award, and first time since 2007.
Carswell, in his 10th season as head coach at SDSU, led the No. 43 Aztecs to an 18-8 overall record, with a 6-0 mark in conference play and a MW regular season championship. SDSU was ranked as high as No. 37 during the season under Carswell, had three winning streaks of at least four matches, and finished the regular season winning five-straight matches. In addition, the Aztecs had a 7-7 record against nationally-ranked opponents.
Under Carswell, SDSU senior Derek Siddiqui and sophomore Thorsten Bertsch each earned all-MW singles first-team honors, while the No. 1 doubles unit of Bertsch and junior Hunter Nicholas was also an all-MW first-team selection.
Carswell now has an overall record of 139-99 at SDSU. Overall, it's the sixth coaching award Carswell has won in his career, as he was named ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in both 2001 and 2003.
