SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis head coach Peter Mattera has been named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, the league announced Wednesday.
Mattera, who is in his 20th season as head coach on The Mesa, earned his third such honor and second in as many years. Mattera led SDSU to its best season in 10 years, posting a 22-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. In addition, the Aztecs clinched their first outright Mountain West title since the 2002 campaign, the top seed in the league tournament and went on a 15-match win streak. San Diego State advanced to the Mountain West Championship final match for the third time in four seasons.
For its stellar season, SDSU was awarded an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament on Tuesday. The Aztecs are set to face No. 19 Baylor on Friday, May 10 at 11 a.m. CT at Northwestern University's Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. This will mark San Diego State's 22nd appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Mattera's award marks the 10th time in the history of the program in which an Aztec head coach has earned conference coach-of-the-year honors. Carol Plunkett, the only other winner in school history, was a seven-time recipient in the PCAA (twice), Big West (three times) and WAC (twice).
Last week, SDSU's seniors Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar were each named to the all-Mountain West singles team at the league's postseason banquet.
