WALNUT, Calif. - Shanieka Thomas broke the school record in the triple jump to lead the 21st-ranked San Diego State track and field team Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Thomas jumped 45 feet, 1 ½ inches (13.75m) to place second of 11 entrants in the Invitational Elite portion of the triple jump. Thomas broke the previous best of Karoline Koehler (44-09.00) set in 2009 by more than four inches. It was Thomas' first triple jump competition of the outdoor season.

Thomas, who already owns the indoor school record in the triple jump (46-02.00) and finished second in the event at the NCAA indoor championships, landed the record mark on her third of six attempts. Thomas broke Koehler's mark on two other of her attempts (fourth (45-00.50) and sixth (44-09.50)) and tied the mark on her fifth jump (44-09.00).

Alex Evans came in 10th in the event with a season-best mark of 41-00.50 (12.51m).

Crystal Manning, the 2011 USA Outdoor Championships triple jump runner-up, won the event with a leap of 45-05.25.

The Aztecs will split squads next weekend at the Penn Relays (April 25-27) in Philadelphia and the Triton Invitational (April 25-27) in nearby La Jolla.
