SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Julia Wais has been named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Wais picks up her second honor of the season and the fifth of her career.
The Goeppingen, Germany, native assisted the Aztecs to a 5-2 win over Marquette on March 15 by notching a victory over Ana Pimienta in first singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Although Wais and doubles partner, Kristin Buth, fell to Erin Gebes and Pimienta in second doubles, the win in singles play was one of the five that would clinch the win for SDSU.
The second match of the weekend came on Sunday, March 17, as San Diego State faced 15th-ranked California, dropping the decision, 6-1. Wais would take ninth-ranked Anett Schutting to three sets on court No. 1, ultimately falling to the Golden Bear, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In doubles play, Wais and Buth would be the only pair of Aztecs to post a win, topping Klara Fabikova and Kelly Chui, 8-5.
The 57th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team gets back onto the courts on this afternoon when it takes on Pepperdine at Aztec Tennis Center at 2pm PT.
