SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State overcame an early 2-1 deficit by scoring four unanswered goals and went on to defeat No. 12 Princeton, 10-7, in the final match of the Aztec Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. With the victory SDSU finished the Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record and improved to 15-7 on the season.
Trailing by one midway through the opening quarter, San Diego State got a pair of goals from Anique Hermann plus strikes from Samantha Voigt and Taelor Moreno to go ahead 5-2 by the six-minute mark of the second period. A goal by the Tigers was countered by second goal from Moreno before a late Princeton score before halftime left SDSU with a 6-4 lead at the break.
The Aztecs got third-quarter goals from Bailey Wickliffe and Amber Pezzolla to extend their advantage to 8-4, but the visitors got one back with under 30 seconds left in the period to make it 8-5.
Things got a bit tense for San Diego State in the fourth quarter as Princeton got goals from Camille Hooks and Brittany Zwirner (her third of the contest) to make it an 8-7 contest with five minutes remaining.
SDSU's Moreno, however, completed her hat trick at the 4:36 mark and Tori Long converted the rebound of Ambers Pezzolla's shot a minute later to give the Aztecs the final three-goal cushion.
The defense was then able to shut down the Tigers the rest of the way for the win. SDSU goalie Morgan Klingfus finished the afternoon with 13 saves.
San Diego State will resume Big West Conference action next Friday, March 2, when its hosts Long Beach State at 4:00 p.m. at the Aztec Aquaplex.
