SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After a one-sided contest earlier in the day, the San Diego State water polo team had to come from behind to edge No. 11 Indiana, 12-11, Saturday afternoon during the Aztec Invitational being held this weekend at the Aztec Aquaplex. SDSU has dispatched Bucknell, 11-3, in its morning match before facing the Hoosiers.
With the wins San Diego State improves to 14-7 on the season. The Aztecs, along with Princeton and UC San Diego, were the only three of the eight teams in the Invitational to finish Saturday's action with a perfect 2-0 record.
SDSU got off to a good start in the contest against Indiana, getting unanswered goals from Carina Carballo, Tori Long and Amber Pezzolla to go up 3-0 after the first period. The Hoosiers, however, came out for period two determined to get back into the game and they did that by scoring on five straight possessions to take a 5-3 lead.
A penalty shot by Pezzolla ended the IU run, but Indiana (14-9) tallied a goal late in the quarter to take a 6-4 advantage into the halftime break. Both teams scored four times in the third period and Indiana took its two-goal lead (10-8) into the final stanza.
San Diego State began its late comeback by getting back-to-back goals from Emily Whalen and Anique Hermann to tie the score at 10-10 before Taelor Moreno's skip shot eluded the Hoosier goalkeeper and gave the Aztecs their first lead since early in the second period.
The drama was far from over, however, as the Hoosiers tied the game at 11-11 with 2:57 left in the contest. But Hermann converted a penalty shot just 13 seconds later for the winning goal and SDSU held on for the win. It was Hermann's fourth goal of the match
In the earlier game against Bucknell (4-12), a total of 10 different Aztecs scored goals in the 11-3 victory over the Bison Anique Hermann was SDSU's multiple goal scored in the contest with two as she finished with a team-high six on the day.
Bucknell actually took the early lead with a goal at the 6:59 mark of the opening period, but the Aztecs then scored the next six to take control of the game.
SDSU added another goal in the second quarter and four more in the third while the Bison tallied just once in each of the first three periods. There was no scoring in the final eight minute.
Aztec goalie Rachel Mitchell had four saves in the first half of the match while Morgan Klingfus played the second half and recorded seven saves,
