SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Aztec Defeat UC Davis, 9-7, With Two Late Goals Water polo downs UC Davis 9-7
A pair of goals just over a minute apart by Taelor Moreno broke a 7-7 deadlock and propelled San Diego State to a 9-7 victory over UC Davis Friday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs rebounded in the second half after trailing by two at the break as they improved to 12-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big West.
SDSU broke on top two minutes into the contest on a goal by Alex Ford, the first of her two on the afternoon. UC Davis (10-10; 0-3 Big West), however, knotted the score at 1-1 later in the period on the first of three goals by Carmen Eggert and the score was tied after one quarter of play.
The teams traded goals early in the second period as SDSU's Bailey Wickliffe and Davis' Jessica Dunn scored 30 second apart after an opponent ejection gave their respective teams the one-man advantage. The Aggies had the best of it the rest of the period getting a goal from Elsie Fullerton and a penalty shot from Eggert to go into halftime with a 4-2 lead.
The third quarter saw the Aztec score three unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead midway through the period. Two goals from Amber Pezzolla and one from Anique Hermann put SDSU on top before the visitors tied the game at 5-5 late in the quarter.
San Diego State looked to take control of the contest early in the fourth period as goal by Samantha Voigt and Ford gave the Aztecs a two-goal cushion at 7-5, but the Aggies came back to tie the game at 7-7. UCD's Jessica Dunn scored just 11 seconds after Ford's goal before Eggert completed her hat trick with 4:28 remaining.
It was then time for Moreno's heroics as she scored at the 2:50 and 1:43 marks to complete the final 9-7 score line in favor of SDSU.
San Diego State returns to the pool on Saturday (March 16) as it hosts the eight-team Aztec Invitational. SDSU will face Bucknell at 10:30 a.m. followed by Indiana at 3:30 p.m.
