SAN DIEGO - After the first day of the heptathlon, the San Diego State track and field team owns the first four places at the Sheraton Mission Valley Aztec Invitational.
Nicole Oudenaarden leads all 20 entrants with 3,387 points, followed by Allison Reaser (3,306), Brittany Bozeman (2,985) and Karsen Sper (2,979). The same quartet all scored in the pentathlon at the MW Indoor Championships last month. Sarah Haydock, meanwhile, is 14th with 2,348 points.
The day kicked off with the 100-meter hurdles, where Reaser was the only athlete to break 14.00 seconds with a 13.86. Sper (14.52) and Oudenaarden (14.82) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Bozeman was eighth (15.13) and Haydock was 15th (16.28).
Next up was the high jump, which was won by Oudenaarden (5-05.75 (1.67 meters)) and North Dakota State's Emily Stalpes. Sper tied for third (5-04.50 (1.64m)), Reaser took sixth (5-03.25 (1.61m)), Bozeman seventh (5-02.25 (1.58m)) and Haydock 11th (4-10.50 (1.49m)).
Oudenaarden also won the shot put with a toss of 46-00.75 (14.04m). Reaser (38-00.75 (11.60m)) and Bozeman (37-11.25 (11.56m)) were second and third, while Sper came in ninth (30-07.50 (9.33m)) and Haydock was 16th (26-11.75 (8.22m)).
Reaser closed the day with a win in the 200 in 24.58, closely followed by Oudenaarden in 24.79. Bozeman (25.79) and Sper (25.92) took fifth and sixth, and Haydock was 16th in 27.83.
The final three events of the heptathlon begin at 9 a.m. PT Friday with the long jump and conclude at 1 p.m. PT with the 800.
Also, most of Friday will be the open events for SDSU with the exception of the women's invitational hammer throw (at UCSD) at 1 p.m. PT and the distance carnival, which runs from 4:30 p.m. PT-8 p.m. PT.
