RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Seventh-ranked San Diego State went 2-for-2 at the Lancer Mini Invite in Riverside, Calif., earlier today. The Aztecs (5-1) cruised to a 17-3 victory over CS San Bernardino and returned to the pool a few hours later to defeat CSU Bakersfield, 10-6.
In the game vs. the Coyotes, SDSU scored the first 10 goals of the game before CSUSB could get on the board. Four different Aztecs (Samantha Voigt, Anique Hermann, Amber Pezzolla, Carina Carballo) found the back of the net in the first quarter as they took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter.
San Diego State went on to score six more goals before allowing a Misty Vu goal with 1:08 left before halftime. With their effort, the Aztecs carried a 10-1 lead into the intermission. At this point, eight different SDSU student-athletes recorded a goal. In the second half, it was all Aztecs as they outscored CS San Bernardino 7-2 over the final 16 minutes.
Pezzolla, Hermann and Madeline Schwartz each scored three goals apiece. Schwartz, however, did all of her damage in the fourth quarter as she recorded three of SDSU's four goals in the frame. Claire McKinnon was the only other Aztec to score multiple times as she rattled the cage twice. Kelli Boling, Alex Ford, Rachel Miller, Taelor Moreno, Voigt and Emily Whalen, meanwhile, all scored once.
In the outing vs. Roadrunners, San Diego State was challenged, but never trailed in the game. Ford scored for the Aztecs just 89 seconds into the game and Bailey Wickliffe found the back of the net nearly two minutes later. SDSU was 33 seconds away from shutting out CSUB, but Taylor Hanson scored to make it a one-goal game.
Whalen scored her second of day on a 6-on-5 opportunity only to have the Roadrunners tie the score at 3 with a pair of unanswered goals. The Aztecs, however, responded with goals from Pezzolla on a penalty shot and Wickliffe on a power play to move ahead, 5-3. Similar to the first quarter, CSUB scored with under a minute left and all of a sudden it was 5-4 at halftime.
San Diego State asserted itself in the deciding third quarter as it outscored the Roadrunners, 2-0. In the period, the Aztecs received goals from Voigt and Moreno, which were separated by 59 seconds, and thwarted every CSUB scoring chance.
Carrying a 7-4 lead in the fourth quarter, San Diego State padded its lead with Whalen's second of the game and third of the day. The score remained the same over the next few minutes until Pezzolla scored her first of the contest with 3:08 left in regulation. CSU Bakersfield then scored twice down the stretch, but its effort was not enough as the Aztecs emerged with the four-goal victory.
Wickliffe led all scorers with three goals, while Pezzolla and Whalen each tallied two goals. Ford, Moreno and Voigt all dented the scoreboard once.
The Aztecs return to action on Thursday when they play host to Hartwick in their regular-season home opener at Aztec Aquaplex. First sprint is set for 3 p.m. PT.
