LOS ANGELES - San Diego State saw its lengthy dual meet victory streak come to an end as fell to UCLA, 185-114, Saturday at the Spieker Aquatic Complex in Los Angeles. The Aztecs did pick up a victory on the day as they defeated Kansas, 197.50-101.50, as part of the double dual meet.
SDSU, which had not dropped a dual meet in almost three years (winning 45 straight since a loss at Wyoming on Jan, 29, 2010), moved its record to 8-1 on the season with the loss to the nationally-ranked Bruins and the win over the Jayhawks.
The Aztecs won five of the meet's 14 swimming events beginning with a first-place showing in the opening race, the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Chelsea Bailey, Katelyn Weddle, Loreen Whitfield and Maddy Dalcamo turned in a time of 1:43.02, a mark which ranks as the eighth-fastest in school history.
The other four SDSU victories were turned in by a pair of swimmers who captured two events apiece.
Katelyn Weddle won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races with times of 1:02.67 and 2:16.17 respectively. Fellow senior Leona Jennings took first in the 100 backstroke in 55.59 and followed that with a win in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.32.
In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Loreen Whitfield finished third with a time (55.33) that ranks as the fifth-best in school history. In addition, the Aztecs' second-place 400 freestyle relay time of 3:27.21 is the 10th-best ever for an Aztec foursome. That mark was turned in by the team of Dalcamo, Meghan Zimmer, Whitney Weisz and Savannah Miller.
The San Diego State divers, meanwhile, completed the second day of the UCLA Diving Invitational by competing on the 1-meter springboard where sophomore Anna Steiner was the Aztecs' top finisher, ending in 15th place (of 54 competitors) with a total score of 466.60.
Other SDSU divers competing included Ashley Stott (27t), Rafaella Suarez (28th), Chandler Marshall (36th) and Kelsey Bean (38th). The divers' scores from Friday's 3-meter competition and Saturday's 1-meter diving were used in scoring the double dual meet.
Up next for San Diego State is a trip to the Midwest where they will face Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11:00 a.m. (CT) at the Cornhuskers' Devaney Center Natatorium.
