SAN DIEGO -- Andranik Khachatryan led the San Diego State men's tennis team on day two of the Aztec Fall Invite as the sophomore earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Matthew Kirby of Tulsa to advance to a 9 a.m. PT matchup on Sunday with USC's Corey Smith for the championship of the "B" Flight.
Juan Florez, meanwhile, picked up another win for SDSU as the junior defeated Sacramento State's Sean Kolar in a back draw match in the "A" Flight consolation bracket.
Freddy Gelbrich and Spencer Simon also had matches in the consolation "A" flight, but were unable to advance. Gelbrich dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Arizona's Kieren Thompson, while Simon suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback to UCSD's Camill Salomon. Derek Siddiqui, meanwhile, suffered a loss to USD's Romain Kalaydjian in the open flight bracket.
The duo of Khachatryan and Florez battled with UCSD's Max Jiganti and Salomon in doubles action, but dropped a close 8-5 decision. After earning a first round bye, Gelbrich and Simon fell short of advancing as they suffered an 8-4 setback to Thompson and Matt Dunn of Arizona.
San Diego State will wrap up play in the Aztec Fall Invite on Sunday. Action will get underway at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
