IRVINE, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team picked up three wins on day two at the USTA/ITA West Regional Tennis Championships, highlighted by Thorsten Bertsch picking up a victory to move on to the round of 16. The Aztecs will continue play on Sunday at Anteater Tennis Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.
In singles play, Bertsch defeated Jurgen DeJager of Cal Poly by the score of 6-1, 6-2 to advance to an 11 a.m. matchup on Sunday with UC Irvine's Jacob Jung.
Other Aztecs picking up wins on Saturday included Andranik Khachatryan, who earned a tough fought 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 win in the consolation bracket. He will now face Devin Barber (Cal Poly) on Sunday morning. Spencer Simon was also victorious in the consolation round as he battled to a 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 victory against Chas Okamoto of Hawai'i. Next up for Simon will be a contest with Cal Poly's Marco Comuzzo on Sunday.
Hunter Nicholas, looking to advance to the round of 16, was unable to continue his recent success as he dropped a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 decision to USC's Johnny Wang. Derek Siddiqui also suffered a setback as he fell 6-3, 6-3 to Thibuat Visy (USD).
Freddy Gelbrich, meanwhile, faced off with UC Irvine's Tyler Pham in the consolation bracket and dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision. Shiva Sangwan was supposed to play USD's Victor Pugliese, but had to withdraw due to injury.
After receiving a first round bye in doubles, Bertsch and Nicholas battled UC Santa Barbara's Axel Bouillin and Sasha Gryaznov on Saturday, but dropped a 9-7 decision. Juan Florez and Siddiqui also just came up short in an 8-6 loss to Jacob Jung and Tyler Pham of UC Irvine.
Sangwan and Simon, meanwhile, battled Clarke Spinosa and Thibuat Visy (USD), but fell short by an 8-6 margin. Gelbrich and Khachatryan faced USC's Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson and also were unable to advance.
