Stockton, Calif. - San Diego State captured first place in all eight women's events Friday afternoon to take the team lead at the annual Pacific Invitational at the Chris Kjeldsen Swim Complex in Stockton, Calif. The Aztecs lead the three-team event with 650 points followed by Brigham young (484) and host Pacific (343).
SDSU got the meet underway by taking first in the 200 medley relay as the foursome of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Gemma Johnson and Mikaela Macklin turned in a time of 1:44.03. That mark goes into the Aztec record book as the eighth-fastest in school history.
Junior Melanie Garibaldi was a double individual winner for San Diego State as she finished first in both the 400 individual medley (4:20.13) and 1,650 freestyle (16:55.22).
Freshman Natilee Ruiz won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.17, a time which ranks as the sixth-best ever for an Aztec swimmer.
Other race winners for SDSU included Chelsea Bailey in the 50 freestyle (23.88), Jennings in the 100 backstroke (56.19) and Katelyn Weddle in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.78).
The Aztecs also captured the 400 freestyle relay with Whitney Weisz, Jennings, Bailey and Macklin recording a time of 3:28.83.
The Pacific Invitational continues on Saturday (Oct. 20) with the first event scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m. The women's field will be joined by swimmers from UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz in addition to the three teams that competed on Friday.
