IRVINE, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team picked up five wins at the USTA/ITA West Regional Tennis Championships on Friday. The Aztecs will continue play on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. PT, at Anteater Tennis Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.

In doubles, Shiva Sangwan and Spencer Simon opened play for SDSU as they defeated Cal Poly's Gannon Daynes and Jordan Kepler, 8-4, to advance to a Saturday matchup with Clarke Spinosa and Thibuat Visy (USD). Freddy Gelbrich and Andranik Khachatryan also competed on Friday and the duo picked up an 8-6 win against Carter Lam and David Schuster of Hawai'i. Gelbrich and Khachatryan will now face USC's Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson on Saturday morning.

Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas received a first round bye and they now prepare for a matchup with UC Santa Barbara's Axel Bouillin and Sasha Gryaznov on Saturday. Juan Florez and Derek Siddiqui, meanwhile, will open doubles competition in the round of 32 against Jacob Jung and Tyler Pham of UC Irvine.

In singles play, Bertsch earned a victory against LMU's Nick Northcott by the score of 6-1, 6-1, to advance to a matchup on Friday with Jurgen DeJager (Cal Poly) in the round of 32. Nicholas also advanced on Friday as he defeated Pepperdine's Damian Gryzelko, 6-4, 6-1. Siddiqui, meanwhile, cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over UC Irvine's Jonathan Hammel.

Florez was unable to advance past the round of 64 after receiving a first round bye, as he suffered an injury and was forced to retire with the score at 7-6, 4-2 against Cal Poly's Jordan Bridge. Gelbrich also received a first round bye, but fell short against Sumeet Shinde (Arizona), 7-5, 6-3. Both will now continue play in the consolation bracket.

Khachatryan faced off with Arizona's Kieren Thompson and dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision, while Simon also suffered a setback to UC Irvine's Jonathan Poon (UC Irvine), 6-3, 6-3. Sangwan, meanwhile, battled USC's Corey Smith and was unable to come out on top in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 decision. The trio isn't done though as they will each move to the consolation bracket.
