SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team is set to take part in the USTA/ITA West Regional Tennis Championships this weekend. The event will be held at Anteater Tennis Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine from Oct. 19-22.
Ten other teams in addition to the Aztecs will be in attendance, including Arizona, Cal Poly, Hawai'i, LMU, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and USC.
SDSU will have four teams competing in doubles play. Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas received a first round bye as did Juan Florez and Derek Siddiqui. Both duos will open competition on Saturday morning.
Shiva Sangwan and Spencer Simon, meanwhile, will face off with Cal Poly's Gannon Daynes and Jordan Kepler on Friday at 9 a.m. Also competing on Friday morning will be Freddy Gelbrich and Andranik Khachatryan as the duo will battle Carter Lam and David Schuster of Hawai'i.
In singles play, San Diego State will have eight players in action on Friday. Five Aztecs have already earned a first round bye and will open play later in the day. Bertsch, however, is the only one awaiting his opponent as he will play the winner of the matchup between Nick Northcott (LMU) and Andrew Raphaelson (USD) in the round of 64.
Florez's second round matchup is set as he will play Jordan Bridge of Cal Poly on Friday at noon. Also competing at noon will be Gelbrich against Sumeet Shinde (Arizona) and Nicholas vs. Damian Gryzelko (Pepperdine). Siddiqui, meanwhile, also knows his opponent in the round of 64 and will face UC Irvine's Jonathan Hammel at 1:30 p.m.
The other three players will open play on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. Khachatryan is set to face Arizona's Kieren Thompson, while Simon will face Jonathan Poon (UC Irvine) and Sangwan will battle USC's Corey Smith.
