SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the second straight season, SDSU swimmer Mikaela Macklin captured the individual title as San Diego defeated the University of San Diego, 71-22, in a pentathlon at the Aztec Aquaplex Friday afternoon. The Aztecs captured eight of the top ten 10 spots in the final pentathlon individual standings.

The contest consisted of five events including the 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Total times in the five swims determined individual placings with the top six finishers from each school scoring points.

Macklin's proved to be the meet's most consistent performer over the five events as she garnered four second-place and one third-place finish. She began the afternoon by finishing second behind teammate Meghan Zimmer (52.02) in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.04.

She them took third in the 100 fly in 58.91 behind fellow Aztecs Gemma Johnson (56.67) and Loreen Whitfield (56.77). Macklin followed that with a second place in the 100 backstroke (58.29) behind event winner Leona Jennings (56.65). She then finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.99) to Aztec newcomer Kelsey Jenkinson (1:06.29).

The final race, the 100 individual medley, saw her swim a 58.83 and finish just .03 second behind Jennings. Macklin's total time of 4:54.06 for the five event was just over two seconds better than Jennings (4:56.87), who finished second in the pentathlon meet for the second consecutive year.

Other top 10 finishers for SDSU included Zimmer (3rd - 4:59.82), Natilee Ruiz (4th - 5:03.71), Savannah Miller (5th - 5:04.56), Johnson (6th - 5:04.91), Melanie Garibaldi (7th - 5:05.52) and Loreen Whitfield (8th - 5:06.78).

Following the Pentathlon events, the teams swam time trials in six events that were not scored.

San Diego State beings its regular dual meet season with contest against mountain West foe UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:00 a.m. at the Aztec Aquaplex.
