DES MOINES, Iowa -

HEPTATHLON RESULTS (FIRST DAY)

San Diego State sophomore Allison Reaser totaled a first-day personal-best 3,386 points in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Reaser's 3,386 points after four of the seven events moved her into ninth place out of the 24 entrants. It's her highest total ever after the first day, bettering the 3,355 points she earned en route to winning the Mountain West Championships on May 9-10. Three athletes are less than a 100 points ahead of Reaser, including Wisconsin's Jessica Flax (sixth place, 3,473), Arkansas' Makeba Alcide (seventh, 3,454) and Arizona State's Keia Pinnick (eighth, 3,424). Oregon's Brianne Theisen leads the competition with 3,803 points.

Reaser kicked off the day by taking ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.77 seconds, which got her 1,011 points. She's only run faster once in her life, a 13.56 clocking at the MW Championships on May 9.

Reaser then finished 18th in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 ¼ inches (1.63m). It was a PR (personal record) by 1.25 inches (March 18, 2011) and bettered this year's best by 3.25 inches. The jump earned her 771 more points.

In the shot put, Reaser was 12th with a toss of 38-05.00. The mark, which came on her third and final attempt after fouling the first two tries, was her second-best effort this outdoor season and got her an additional 642 points.

Reaser closed her day in the 200, comfortably finishing sixth with a time of 24.20. It was the second-fastest mark of the year and added 962 points to her first-day total.

The final day of the heptathlon gets underway at 3 p.m. CT Friday with the long jump, followed by the javelin (4:15 p.m. CT) and the 800 (6:45 p.m. CT).

Whitney Ashley, who yesterday won the discus throw for the program's first national title since 1985 and fourth overall, competes again on Friday in the shot put, which is slated for a 5 p.m. CT start. Ashley qualified for this weekend's NCAA Championships by finishing fifth at the NCAA West Prelims in Austin, Texas, two weeks ago with a toss of 55-05.00. The mark broke a Mountain West record, was second all-time at SDSU and has her ranked sixth heading into this weekend's meet. Ashley also competed in last year's championships, but fouled on all three of her attempts.
