SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Allison Reaser totaled a first-day personal-best 3,437 points in the heptathlon at the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Reaser's 3,437 points after four of the seven events moved her into 12th place out of the 20 entrants. It's her highest total ever after the first day, bettering the 3,386 points she earned en route to placing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 7-8. Four athletes are less than 100 points ahead of Reaser, including Wisconsin's Jessica Flax (11th place, 3,459), Kansas State's Ryann Krais (10th place, 3,473), Central Missouri's Lindsay Lettow (9th place, 3,502) and Yvette Lewis (unattached, 3,514). Hyleas Fountain (Nike) leads the competition with 3,948 points.
Reaser kicked off the day by taking fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.55 seconds, which got her 1,043 points. The 13.55 mark is a personal-best, bettering a 13.56 clocking at the Mountain West Championships on May 9.
Reaser then finished 18th in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 ¼ inches (1.63m). She tallied the same mark on June 7 at the NCAA Championships, when it was a PR (personal record) by 1.25 inches (March 18, 2011). Friday's jump earned her 771 more points. In the shot put, Reaser was 12th with a toss of 39-05.00. The mark, which came on her second attempt, earned her an additional 654 points.
Reaser closed her day in the 200, finishing fifth with a time of 24.12 The mark earned her 969 points to put her in 12th place after the first four events.
The final day of the heptathlon gets underway at 3 p.m. PT Saturday with the long jump, followed by the javelin (4:15 p.m. PT) and the 800 (6:20 p.m. PT). Reaser needs to finish in the top three and reach the Olympic "A" standard of 6,150 points to advance to the London Olympics.
