BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -

San Diego State freshman Alexa Evans finished in 13th place in the discus throw on the first day of the USA Junior Track & Field Championships Friday in Bloomington, Ind.

Evans, who redshirted her first season as an Aztec this year, took 13th of the 26 competitors with a toss of 145 feet, 7 inches (44.37 meters). Evans got the mark on her first attempt of the afternoon and fouled on each of her final two tries. She was seeded 15th coming into the weekend with her season-best mark of 160-1 (48.79m).

Shelbi Vaughan of Mansfield Hi won the event with a meet-record throw of 198-9 (60.59m).

SDSU will have at least five representatives at the Olympic Trials in a few weeks. Current senior Whitney Ashley, who won the discus at the NCAA Championships earlier this month, and sophomore Allison Reaser have provisionally qualified for the trials in the discus and heptathlon, respectively, and will most likely compete in the trials. Former San Diego State great Melinda Smedley has also provisionally qualified in the 100-meter dash.

Aztec sophomore Shanieka Thomas (triple jump) and assistant coach Dorian Scott (shot put), meanwhile, will compete in the Jamaican Trials at the end of June. Thomas is the reigning NCAA runner-up in the triple jump, while Scott is a 2008 Olympian and two-time World Championship finalist in the shot put.
