The San Diego State track and field team begins its championship portion of the schedule Wednesday at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. The four-day meet begins with the heptathlon at noon MT.
Under head coach Shelia Burrell's direction, the Aztecs have finished seventh (2010) and fourth (2011) in the outdoor championship meet. Last year, Whitney Ashley led the way for SDSU by earning the meet's high point award after winning the shot put and discus throw, and taking fourth in the hammer throw. Five other athletes earned all-MW honors, including Alex Evans (triple jump, third place), Kelsy Hintz (pole vault, first place), Allison Reaser (heptathlon, first place), Jeanette McConnell (discus throw, third place) and Shanieka Thomas (triple jump, second place). Only McConnell (graduation) is gone from that group.
Heading into the meet, San Diego State has best marks in six events, including Ashley in the shot put (54 feet, 1 inch) and the discus (183-01), Hintz in the pole vault (13-10.00), Reaser in the 400-meter hurdles (58.37 seconds) and heptathlon (5,510 points), and Thomas in the triple jump (43-08.00).
Reaser kicks things off for the Aztecs Wednesday in the first day of the heptathlon, beginning with the 100 hurdles at noon MT. Reaser, who won last year's heptathlon and is a two-time MW indoor pentathlon champion, will close the day out with the high jump, shot put and 200. The final three events conclude on Thursday with the long jump (12:30 p.m. MT), javelin and 800.
SDSU's first event on Friday is the hammer with Ellie Fanaika, Ashley and Jasmine Burrell set to compete at 10 a.m. MT. Friday ends with Marianne Hogan running the 10,000 at 4:50 p.m. MT.
On Saturday, Ashley, Burrell and Brittany Gonter are set for the shot put, beginning at 10:30 a.m. MT. The MW Championships conclude with the 4x400-meter relay (Reaser, Maya Carter, Thomas and Josefine Koskinen) at 3:55 p.m. MT.
