COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State women's tennis head coach Peter Mattera has been named the 2012 Mountain West Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, the league announced Thursday morning.

Mattera, who just completed his 19th season as head coach on Montezuma Mesa, earned his second such honor and first since 2003. Mattera led SDSU to a 5-2 record in MW action, which was the second-best mark in the conference, and led his third-seeded Aztecs to the finals of the Mountain West Championship.

San Diego State blanked New Mexico in the quarterfinals and posted a 4-1 victory over second-seeded and No. 48 UNLV in the semifinal round to reach the title match. The Aztecs, however, were unable to complete their championship rally in a 4-2 loss to top-seeded and 32nd-ranked TCU.

Mattera's award marks the ninth time in the history of the program in which an Aztec head coach has earned conference coach-of-the-year honors. Carol Plunkett, the only other winner in school history, was a seven-time recipient in the PCAA (twice), Big West (three times) and WAC (twice).
