COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Whitney Ashley and Holly Waseloff each captured individual titles to lead the San Diego State track and field team Friday at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships at the Cadet Outdoor Track & Field Complex in Colorado Springs, Colo.
After three days and seven completed events, the Aztecs are in second place with 49.50 points. Colorado State leads with 62 points, followed by SDSU, TCU (44), Boise State (32), New Mexico (25.50), Air Force (23), UNLV (20) and Wyoming (17).
Ashley won the discus throw for the second consecutive year with a toss of 166 feet, 4 inches. Ashley now has four MW titles (2011-12 discus, 2011 outdoor shot put, 2012 indoor shot put) and will look for a fifth tomorrow in the shot put.
Waseloff, meanwhile, continued San Diego State's dominance in the pole vault by winning the event with a vault of 13-00.25. It was the ninth-best mark in program history. An Aztec has now won the pole vault title at a MW championships 15 times out of a possible 26 meets (indoor and outdoor).
Kelsy Hintz, who won the indoor pole vault this year and last year's outdoor pole vault, took second today at 12-07.50, while Heather Arseneau was fifth (12-03.50).
SDSU had two placers in the long jump as Shanieka Thomas was fourth with a leap of 18-10.75 and Alex Evans took sixth in 18-09.00.
Other top-10 finishes on the day went to Marianne Hogan in the 10,000 meters (ninth, 38:36.58), Jasmine Burrell in the discus (ninth, 145-07), Brittany Gonter in the discus (10th, 145-02) and Ellie Fanaika in the hammer throw (10th, 171-02).
In preliminary heats, Allison Reaser (second, 13.79) and Evans (eighth, 14.16) each advanced to tomorrow's final in the 100 hurdles, Reaser (fourth, 60.33) in the 400 hurdles, Thomas in the 400 (seventh, 56.61) and Josefine Koskinen in the 800 (seventh, 2:14.43).
The MW Championships wraps up on Saturday with Ashley, Burrell and Gonter kicking things off in the shot put, beginning at 10:30 a.m. MT. The meet concludes with the 4x400-meter relay (Reaser, Maya Carter, Thomas and Koskinen) at 3:55 p.m. MT.
