STANFORD, Calif. - No. 8 and seventh-seeded San Diego State fell to No. 5 and fourth-ranked Arizona State, 12-11, in the fifth-place game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Sunday at Avery Aquatic Center. The loss drops the Aztecs to 22-11 on the season.

SDSU and ASU were tied at 4-4 after one quarter with the Sun Devils taking a 7-6 lead at halftime. The Aztecs stormed back in the third quarter with four goals, but Arizona State record three of its own as the game moved to the fourth with the score deadlocked at 10-10.

In the final eight minutes, the Sun Devils scored twice to take a 12-10 lead. Meaghan Poland found the back of the net to bring the Aztecs to within one of tying score and San Diego State forced a turnover with 19 seconds to play. Following a SDSU timeout, the Scarlet and Black had a chance to tie the score, but its attempt hit the post and Arizona State escaped with the win.

Amber Pezzolla led the Aztecs with four goals, while Poland and Anique Hermann both added two. Alana Burgess, Alex Ford and Leanne Ford all scored once for San Diego State. Kelly Campoli made eight saves in net.
