SAC DIEGO - The San Diego State crew team will be at Mission Bay this weekend, March 31-April 1, for the 39th renewal of the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic. The competition begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and runs all day with more than 100 over the two-day event.
The Aztecs will be represented by four boats in various divisions. Each event will consist of heats on Saturday with three sets of finals slated for either later in the day or on Sunday. The top two finishers in each of Saturday's heats will advance to the Grand Final while the next two fastest boats will move into the Petite Final. The fifth and sixth place finishers will go into the Third Final with the exception of the Women's Open category where there will be just a Petite and Grand Final.
SDSU's first race will come in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Sea World Cal Cup event. The Aztecs will be in Heat B which is slated to start at 8:10 a.m. Included in their heat are teams from Duke, San Diego, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Drexel and Fordham in addition to the Aztecs.. The SDSU boat will be crewed by Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Sarah Gannon (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Kate Raymond (six), Emily Walton (five), Vivianna Smith (four), Marissa Shaw (three), Sophie Poser (two) and Romaine Desclos (bow).
At 9:10 a.m., San Diego State's will vie for the Karen Plumleigh Courtney Cup with its entry in the Women's Collegiate 4 will race. SDSU's boast will compete in Heat A against crews from Virginian, UCLA, Clemson, USC, Oklahoma and British Columbia. The Aztec boat will consist of Samantha Stauber (Coxswain), Cassie Wilson (stroke), Elizabeth West (three), Rae Backens (two), and Samantha Flores (bow).
San Diego State will also have a boat in the Women's Collegiate Novice race (Heat C) scheduled for 11:40 a.m. Opposing crews in that heat vying for the Laura V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy USC, Minnesota, Cal, Clemson, Texas and UCLA. Competitors in the Aztec entry will include Emily Mauer (coxswain), Sarah Hultin (stroke), Brittany Harris (seven), Veronica McLean (six), Tara Kistler (five), Tiana Fohne (four), Leah Peterson (three), Kayli Wagner (two) and Sarah Winfield (bow).
The two heats of Women's Open, competing for the Carley Copley Cup, will take place in the afternoon with the Aztec scheduled to race at 2:00 p.m. Other schools competing in Heat B along with SDSU include USC, Minnesota, Cal, Clemson, Texas and UCLA. San Diego State's entry will be crewed by Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Alex Kudlicki (stroke), Chandler Cole (seven), Lindsay Miller (six), Peggy Tio (five), Darian Kimball (four), Kaitlyn Goss (three), Alex Accornero (two) and Erica Orgon (bow).
The 3rd Final for both the Women's Collegiate Varsity and Women's 4+ along with Petite Finals in the Collegiate Novice and Women's Open divisions will be held later Saturday afternoon. The remaining Petite Finals and all Grand Finals will be held Sunday morning.
