NAMPA, Idaho - Shanieka Thomas and Whitney Ashley each finished in the top eight in their respective event to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday night in Nampa, Idaho.
Thomas finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 7 ½ inches. Andrea Geubelle of Kansas won the event in 44-10.25.
Ashley took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 53-07.00. Oklahoma's Tia Brooks won the event with a throw of 53-07.00.
For their efforts, Thomas and Ashley earned first-team USTFCCCA All-American honors. Additionally, the two scored a combined three points, which put the Aztecs in a tie for 48th with Auburn, Boise State, Illinois, Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee out of 64 scoring teams.
Kelsy Hintz, meanwhile, came in 15th in the pole vault to garner second-team USTFCCCA All-American accolades. Hintz cleared 13-09.25 in an event won by Tina Sutej of Arkansas in 14-07.25.
While Ashley, Hintz and Thomas were competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the rest of the team participated in the San Diego Collegiate Championships at nearby UC San Diego in La Jolla. SDSU captured seven individual titles en route to a second-place finish with 131 points. The host Tritons won the meet with 206 points.
Josefine Koskinen won both the 800 meters and the 1,500 to lead San Diego State. She defeated 22 others in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 17.62 seconds and beat 25 others in the 1,500 in 4:41.01.
Allison Reaser, who won the high point award at the Mountain West Indoor Championships two weeks ago, took first today in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.28 seconds.
In the high jump, Carrington Mahr cleared 5-05.25 to take first out of 10 entrants, while Holly Waseloff completed a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in the pole vault by winning with a mark of 12-00.00.
Jasmine Burrell won the discus throw with a toss of 157-05 (No. 8 all-time at SDSU) and Ellie Fanaika won the hammer throw in 166-06.
San Diego State plays host to the three-day Aztec Invitational, beginning on Thursday.
