COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first MW weekly award for the right-hander and the first by an Aztec this season.
For the week ending March 4, Arbino went 3-1 with a 1.47 ERA over 28 2/3 innings. She pitched in all six games over the weekend, starting four and tossing two shutouts. She struck out 21.
Last Thursday, Arbino threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out eight against 2011 NCAA tournament team and three-time defending MW champion BYU in a 1-0 win.
After giving up a run on three hits in 2/3 innings of relief against 2011 NCAA tournament team Fresno State on Friday, Arbino came back in the nightcap to pitch a complete game shutout against Charlotte, allowing six hits and four walks over five inning. She struck out five.
On Saturday, Arbino gave up one run on four hits and a walk over three innings of relief vs. Saint Joseph's. Later against Nevada, she surrendered three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out five over six innings in her lone loss of the weekend.
On Sunday, Arbino got the complete game win against 2011 NCAA tournament team Long Beach State. She allowed one run on nine hits (seven singles) and three walks, while striking out two.
On the season, Arbino is 6-4 with a 1.34 ERA over 73 innings. She has 53 strikeouts, eight complete games and four shutouts (three solo).
SDSU (13-11) travels to Fresno, Calif., for the Bayer CropScience Classic this weekend where it will take on Butler (9 a.m. PT) and Connecticut (11:30 a.m. PT) on Friday, No. 2/1 California (1:15 p.m. PT) on Saturday, and Purdue (8:45 a.m. PT) and No. 18/15 Oregon (10:45 a.m. PT) on Sunday.
