ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior Kelsy Hintz won the pole vault Friday to keep San Diego State in first place after two days of 2012 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Hintz cleared 14 feet, 0 inches to defeat 14 others for her second consecutive conference pole vault title (also 2011 MW outdoor champion). The 14-00.00 is tied with Shayla Balentine (2005) for the third-best indoor mark in school history and it's the eighth-best height in the country this season (heading into this weekend).
Hintz's victory helped the Aztecs maintain their lead after two days of the three-day competition. After seven events, SDSU has 47 points, followed by New Mexico (42), TCU (41), Air Force (40) and Colorado State (35). Boise State and UNLV are tied for sixth with 32 points, while Wyoming is eighth with four points.
Sophomore Shanieka Thomas took third of 24 entrants in the long jump with a leap of 19-03.25. Also scoring for San Diego State in the event was sophomore Allison Reaser (sixth place, 18-11.75) and senior Julianne Alarcio (eighth, 18-10.75). Alarcio's long jump mark bettered yesterday's personal record in the pentathlon by 0.25 inches and is the 10th-best indoor leap in program history.
Senior Whitney Ashley finished fourth of 23 in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 62-11.50. It was the second-best mark in school history, just behind redshirt freshman teammate Jasmine Burrell, who took seventh today in 61-09.50. Senior Ellie Fanaika, meanwhile, was ninth with a throw of 59-01.50 (No. 3 all-time at SDSU).
Sophomore Holly Waseloff set a huge PR in the pole vault to finish sixth in 12-07.50. The mark, which was the eighth-best vault ever by an Aztec, easily bettered her previous indoor best of 11-11.75, set on Feb. 4 at the NAU Open. Classmate Heather Arseneau also set a PR of 12-03.50 en route to a ninth-place showing.
Sophomore Carrington Mahr scored for San Diego State as its lone representative in the high jump, clearing 5-04.25 for a seventh-place finish.
On the track, Reaser qualified for tomorrow's final in both the 60-meter hurdles (first, 8.48 seconds) and the 200 (ninth, 24.87), while juniors Josefine Koskinen (sixth, 2:12.66) and Alex Evans (seventh, 8.79) each moved on in the 800 and 60-hurdles, respectively.
Junior Marianne Hogan made her season debut with a 16th-place finish in the 5,000 in 18:27.49 and later anchored the distance medley relay that came in seventh to give the Aztecs an additional two points. Sophomore Amy Reaser (1,200), sophomore Maderia Toatley (400) and Koskinen (800) started with the baton, before Hogan finished in the 1,600.
The final day gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) with the shot put, beginning at 9:45 a.m. MT. The final event of the competition is the 4x400-meter relay at 1:25 p.m. MT.
