COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Despite not running in the 4x400-meter relay or in the mid-distance or distance events, the San Diego State track and field team finished second of nine teams at the Air Force Team Challenge Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Aztecs accumulated 91.50 points, trailing only Colorado State's 98. Colorado (79.50 points), Brigham Young (68), Wyoming (51) and Long Beach State (51) rounded out the top five.
SDSU used five individual first-place finishes, including two by senior Whitney Ashley. Ashley, who won the shot put and took second in the weight throw last week at the Bronco Invitational, won both events Saturday. Ashley broke her indoor school record in the shot put for the second consecutive week with a throw of 54 feet, 6 ¾ inches and also captured the weight throw with a toss of 60-07.50. Senior Ellie Fanaika was the runner-up in the weight throw with the third-best mark in school history of 57-07.00, while redshirt freshman Jasmine Burrell took third in the shot put (48-02.50).
Sophomore Shanieka Thomas, who was named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts last week in Nampa, Idaho, won the long jump with a leap of 19-05.50. Junior Alex Evans, meanwhile, won the triple jump in 40-00.75 and was third in the long jump with the ninth-best leap in school history of 18-09.75. She also ran a personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles for the second straight week in 8.89 seconds.
The San Diego State pole vaulters made their debut Saturday, taking fourth, seventh and 10th, respectively, among 21 entrants. The 2011 MW Outdoor Track and Field pole vault champion and 2011 NCAA outdoor qualifier, junior Kelsy Hintz cleared 12-09.50 for a fourth-place finish to pace the Aztecs. Sophomore Heather Arseneau set a collegiate-best mark (indoor or outdoor) of 12-01.50 to take seventh.
On the track, sophomore Maderia Toatley beat out 33 other entrants in the 200 meters in 24.62. She was the only competitor to break 25.00 seconds in the one-lap event. Toatley also took seventh in the 60 with a PR clocking of 7.80.
