The San Diego State track and field team hosted its annual Red-Black Intrasquad All-Comers meet on Dec. 3 at Aztrack Sports Deck. The Aztecs were some of 146 athletes who competed in the 15-event, USA Track and Field sanctioned meet on an unattached basis.

SDSU split up into "Red" and "Black" teams and competed against each other for scoring purposes, with the Black team coming out on top, 53-74.

"This annual Aztec tradition marks our transition into indoor and outdoor track and field competition," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "I was very impressed with how our athletes performed today. They've shown they have the potential to go far this season. Opening up the Red-Black meet to the community this year generated a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm that should serve us well and carry us far."

While the bulk of the competitors were of high school and college age, the youngest participant was nine and the oldest was 72. Participants traveled as far north as Aptos, Calif., and a masters level high jumper came all the way from St. Louis, Mo.

Former San Diego State men's track and field coaches Dixon Farmer (meet announcer), Jim Cerveny (starter) and Gary Stathis (pole vault judge) headed up the list of volunteers. Including competitors, officials, spectators and volunteers, over 200 were in attendance.

"We really exceeded expectations today in terms of numbers and breadth of competition," meet director Rick Reaser said. "The volunteers were amazing, especially the Aztec lacrosse team. The high school, college and masters athletes put down some impressive early season marks on a fabulous San Diego day. All in all, it was a great meet."
