LAS VEGAS - San Diego State captured 11 of 16 events as it defeated UNLV, 171-124, Saturday afternoon at the Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas. Eight different Aztecs won individual events with both relay teams also emerging victorious as SDSU improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Aztecs started the meet by taking first and second in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Gemma Johnson and Stephanie Koch won the race in 1:44.42, a time that ranks as the seventh-fastest in school history.
Jennings would go on to win both the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 56.92 and 2:03.21 respectively. She was the lone SDSU competitor to win muitple individual events.
A pair of Aztec newcomers wasted little time in making their marks as they won events with times that will enter the school's top 10 list. Junior Gemma Johnson, a transfer from the University of Sydeny (Australia) won the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.56, third-best in school history. Freshman Taylor Lakey (Southridge HS in Beaverton, Ore.) took the 200 butterfly event in 2:04.80, a time that places fourth on the SDSU all-time top 10 chart.
Breaststroke specialists Katelyn Weddle and Mikaela Macklin took the top two spots in both of their events. Weddle captured the 100 breast (1:05.45) with Macklin second. The twosome reversed that order in the 200 breast with Macklin winning in a time of 2:21.58.
SDSU's other first-place finishes included sophomore Kelly Marquenie in the 1000 free (10:08.19) and junior Stephanie Koch in the 100 freestyle (52.34). Marquenie also had a second-place showing in the 500 free.
In the diving, San Diego State's Kristen Meier was first in the three-meter board with a score of 319.30 and placed second in the one-meter with 276.80 points.
The Aztecs finished off the meet by posting the top time in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Macklin, Marquenie, Jessica Crider and Meghan Zimmer went 3:28.44 to establish the ninth-fastest time in school history,
Up next for San Diego State is a trip north to San Luis Obispo in two weeks to participate in the Cal Poly Invitational scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22.
