SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team opened play at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
In the first round of flight two doubles, the duo of Thorsten Bertsch and Freddy Gelbrich defeated Fresno State's David Ayoun and Reid deLaubenfels, 8-6. In flight one doubles, Derek Siddiqui and Jose Sierra Short were unable to have the same success, as they were on the wrong end of a 9-7 decision to Bernard Schoeman and Rene Ruegamer of UNLV.
In flight two of singles play, Bertsch was on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Manfred Jeske of Arkansas. Sierra Short, meanwhile, dropped his opening match to Auburn's Daniel Cochrane by the score of 7-6, 7-6.
Bertsch bounced back in the consolation round though, picking up a 6-2, 7-6 victory against deLaubenfels. Sierra Short was unable to have the same success, as he dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision to Utah's Ben Tasevac.
In flight one of singles play, Siddiqui dropped his opening match to No. 70 Andreas Mies of Auburn, 6-3, 6-2. The Los Alamitos, Calif. native then found himself on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-2 decision to UC Irvine's Fabian Matthews in consolation singles.
