SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team had one player advance to the semifinals of the singles consolation draw on Saturday in Malibu, Calif. at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on the campus of Pepperdine University.
Hunter Nicholas highlighted play for the Aztecs as he earned consecutive victories on Saturday. Nicholas started off play with a 6-3, 7-6 win against Cal Poly's Naveen Beasely. Then in the quarterfinals, Nicholas defeated Daniel Simko of LMU, by the score of 6-2, 6-4. The Park City, Utah native will now face off against UC Riverside's Felix Macherez on Sunday.
Bertsch earned a 6-4, 7-6 win against Chas Okamoto of Hawaii. The Mannheim, Germany native was unable to continue his success, however, as he dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Fresno State's Zach Leslie.
Freddy Gelbrich, meanwhile, picked up a 1-6, 6-1 (10-8) victory against 17th-seeded Jenson Turner of Pepperdine. Gelbrich was then on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Diame in the quarterfinals.
