SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team picked up six victories on the opening day of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship.
In doubles play, two of the three Aztec duos were victorious. Freddy Gelbrich and Hunter Nicholas defeated Hawaii's Dmytro Kovalyov and Jared Spiker by the score of 8-4. Andranik Khachatryan and Derek Siddiqui also earned a win, picking up an 8-3 victory against Jean-Charles Diame and Sai Karik Nakireddi of Fresno State. Thorsten Bertsch and Jose Sierra Short, meanwhile, were unable to pick up a win in dropping an 8-5 decision to the UC Irvine duo of Jacab Jung and Shuhei Shibahara.
In singles play, San Diego State earned four wins. Javier Pulgar, the 14th-seed, earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the second round after earning a first round bye. Siddiqui opened play by earning a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory against Fresno State's Jean-Charles Diame. Then in the second round, Siddiqui defeated David Schuster of Hawaii by the score of 7-6, 6-4. Sierra Short was also victorious, defeating Cal Poly's Sebastian Bell, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, however, Sierra Short dropped a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 decision to ninth-seeded Clarke Spinosa of USD.
After earning a first round bye, Khachatryan was unable to advance past the second round as he dropped a 6-4, 7-6 decision to Fresno State's David Ayoun. Nicholas, who also earned a first round bye, fell to 16th-seeded Benjamin Recknagel of UCSB, 7-5, 6-3. Gelbrich, meanwhile, was on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Cal Poly's Brian McPhee. Bertsch also was unable to pick up a victory as he dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Jonny Wang of USC.
