SAN DIEGO - San Diego State volunteer assistant coach Jessica Cosby wrapped up her competition in the hammer throw Sunday at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, Korea.
The lone American in the finals, Cosby finished 11th with a best throw of 226 feet, 1 inch. Russia's Tatyana Lysenko won the gold with a toss of 253-0. After fouling her first attempt in the final, Cosby went 226-1 and 223-7. The 2008 Olympian would have needed to posted a mark of 229-8 to make the final eight and earn three more throws.
In the qualification flights on Friday, Cosby threw the hammer 233-2, the eighth-best mark of the 30 competitors and fourth-best in Group A.
Cosby earned her spot on Team USA by winning the hammer at the USA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June. Cosby's throw of 234-0 was just off her personal-best mark of 238-4, set on May 7 at the Occidental Invitational. The 238-4 is just shy of Erin Gilreath's 2005 American record of 242-4.
