Aztec Story Lines
- After more than a week off, San Diego State will return to the pitch this week for a pair of matches. The Aztecs play host to New Mexico on Friday as their quest for a Mountain West title begins. Then on Sunday, SDSU will play at No. 16 Santa Clara.
- San Diego State and New Mexico is the feature match-up of the day on Montezuma Mesa and is set to start at 4 p.m. PT barring overtime of the Aztec men's match vs. Stanford at 1:30 p.m. PT. SDSU's kick-off time at Santa Clara has been moved to 2:30 p.m. PT to accommodate the Bronco men's game vs. Gonzaga at noon.
- Friday's clash between the Aztecs and Lobos will pit the two squads that were picked to finish atop the Mountain West standings prior to the start of the campaign. San Diego State was selected to win the league championship after it garnered 34 points and four first-place votes. New Mexico, meanwhile, was voted second with 33 points and three first-place tallies.
- The Aztecs are looking to break a two-game slide, their first losing streak of 2011, after it dropped a 1-0 decision last Wednesday against UC Santa Barbara at home. San Diego State fell victim to a questionable take-down call, which resulted in a penalty kick, one the Gauchos put away in the 54th minute. In the end, the Aztecs held an advantage in shots (14-7), shots on goal (4-2) and corner kicks (5-3).
- On the line Friday are a couple of streaks for SDSU. The Aztecs have won five straight regular-season home dates against Mountain West foes and are unbeaten in their last seven regular-season outings against league competition. The last time San Diego State suffered defeat at SDSU Sports Deck during the regular season against a MW club was Oct. 31, 2008, when TCU escaped with a 2-1 victory.
- San Diego State is looking to avoid its first three-game losing streak since the 2006 campaign. That season, the Aztecs closed the regular season with four consecutive losses from Oct. 19, 2006-Oct. 28, 2006. SDSU snapped the skid with a 1-1 double-overtime draw vs. New Mexico at the MWC Championship.
- The Aztecs are 6-1-2 in their last nine home games against the Mountain West. Last season, San Diego State played host to the MWC Championship and defeated Wyoming in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 18 BYU in the semifinal round.
- SDSU is 5-4-3 in Mountain West season openers, but is unbeaten in its last two. In 2009, the Aztecs tied No. 13 BYU, 2-2, before defeating TCU in double overtime a year ago. Both contests were at SDSU Sports Deck where San Diego State is 3-2-2 in MW history in conference lidlifters.
- The Aztecs enter the game with New Mexico with an all-time record of 7-5-6 against the Lobos. The schools have split the last two meetings and tied the previous three. In 2009, San Diego State downed UNM, 3-1, in San Diego. New Mexico, however, returned the favor in Albuquerque a year ago, defeating SDSU, 2-1.
- San Diego State is 4-1 against New Mexico in games played in San Diego. The Aztecs posted wins in 1994, 2000, 2004 and 2009. The lone defeat came in 2002.
- SDSU is set to make the trip to the Bay Area to face a Santa Clara team it has never defeated. The Aztecs are 0-6-1 all time vs. the Broncos and are meeting them for the second straight season. A year ago, No. 9 SCU downed SDSU, 1-0, in the 22nd minute and held off the Aztecs the rest of the way. The Scarlet and Black is 0-4-1 vs. the Broncos in Santa Clara.
- San Diego State's lone result against Santa Clara occurred in 1997, when the teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.
